Makrolon® Polycarbonate High-Tech Plastic Leads the Way

Bayer MaterialScience is a global leader in polycarbonate resin.

Bayer invented Makrolon® polycarbonate in 1953, was first in the world with commercial scale-production in 1958, and has continued to work with customers to develop many innovative applications from automotive headlamp lenses, CDs and DVDs, medical devices and shatter-resistant optical lenses to name just a few. Makrolon® resin is the material of choice for polycarbonates.

All of these products are well established in North American and global markets.

Bayer had polycarbonate production facilities strategically located around the world to support our global Makrolon® product line. World-scale polycarbonate production sites meeting ISO 9001:2000 quality standards are located in:

  • Antwerp, Belgium
  • Baytown, Texas
  • MapTaPhut, Thailand
  • Uerdingen, Germany
  • China

In North America, Bayer produces semi-finished sheet products in Sheffield, Massachusetts at Sheffield Plastics and polycarbonate film products in Berlin, Connecticut at our Bayer Films Americas unit. At our Newark, Ohio facility, Makrolon® polycarbonate is tailored to specific customer needs by compounding the resin with other polymers and additives.
