Belts, Hoses, Cables
and Profiles
Strong Enough
Whether used as sheathing
for supply cables on oil platfoms or for oceanographic measuring
cables, Desmopan® and Texin® thermoplastic polyurethanes
are specialty materials in the production of cables and supply
lines. These TPU materials remain flexible even at low temperatures,
contain no plasticizers and, with good cut and abrasion resistance
and high tensile strength, offer outstadning long-term service
properties.
With tubes and hoses,
TPU has the added advantage over rubber of a higher elasticity
modulus and higher strength properties. Hoses can be manufactured
in lower wall thicknesses and still have excellent bursting resistance.
Grades with these properties are Desmopan
385E and Texin
250. Typical applications include pneumatic, irrigation
and drainage pipes.
When it comes to hydraulic and fire-fighting
hoses, Desmopan and Texin TPUs have another strength because they
are virtually unaffected by many chemicals. The high wear
resistance and dynamic stability of these thermoplastic polyurethanes
are also very important in the production of toothed belts.
New
Trend - Tailor-made customized solutions
The demands made on
hoses, cables, belts and profiles produced by extrusion are far
from similar. Quite simply, there is no such thing in the
industry as a universal material. Desmopan and Texin TPUs
can be precisely tailored to each fit an application.
Optimizing the
details in new developments
Bayer is working to
develop new grades of Desmopan and Texin TPUs that are harder
than the current grades and can still be extruded. This
strong material could be used to manufacture pneumatic hoses with
an even higher compression strength and mechanical resistance.
To make spiral hoses, Bayer is also involved in the development
of more flexible grades with a shore hardness of around 70 A.
Also in the development
stages are halogen-free, flame-retardent Desmopan grades that
satisfy the strict UL 94 standard (Underwriters Laboratories)
with the top classification of V-o at a specimen thickness of
3.0 mm.
To increase the heat
resistance of belts, we are also working on more heat-resistant
grades of Desmopan TPU.
