Films and Coatings

Thin layers for tough surfaces

Even in their thinnest form, these films are tear resistant and highly extensible. Extruded films made of Desmopan® and Texin® TPU materials have been used in air-protected packaging material, watertight and breathable rain jackets and even bullet and hurricane- resistant safety glass.

New Trend - Textile fabrics coated with TPU

TPU is also highly compatible with textile fabrics.  The two materials can be combined by calendering, extrusion coating and powder coating. A typical example of an industrial fabric of this kind is the underlay sheeting used in the construction industry.  Fabrics coated with lightfast Desmopan TPU also have outstanding potential for applications in car interiors such as door liners and trunk covers.

Colorful, transparent boat skins

Bayer offers Desmopan TPU grades that are salt-water resistant for coatings on the skins of inflatable boats, collapsible canoes, life rafts, life jackets and oil barriers.  These materials can be designed in any color and since they are thermoplastics, they are more economical to process than rubber.  Desmopan plastic skins have better mechanical properties than their PVC counterparts and higher scratch and tear resistance.

A clear view of fancy yarns

In addition to coating the entire textile fabric with TPU, it is possible to coat individual yarn filaments.  Coverings such as this dramatically increase the tenacity of yarn and protect it from soiling.  Covering yarns with one of Bayer's new transparent, light-fast grades of Desmopan TPU makes for an appealing design feature because it adds attractiveness and protection at the same time.  Covered yarns can be used in decorative fabrics for seats such as car seats, armchairs and office chairs.

More economical production of solar modules with TPU

Desmopan TPU can also be used for the more economical production of solar modules.  Until now, they have been manufactured through a relatively complicated process involving vacuum lamination with long production cycles. Tailor-made Desmopan films bond the solar cells with glass and PVF film so that the lamination process can be finished without a vacuum.  The savings come from a faster, simpler manufacturing process.
