Material News

Bayer Polymers' expands its line of aromatic Desmopan TPU with the addition of three new grades: 9659D (a 59 Shore D polyether), 9662D (a 62 Shore D polyether), and 9665D (a 65 Shore D polyether).

These grades - besides being highly transparent - are UV stabilized, wear resistant, plasticiser and halogen-free, and easy to recycle. All three grades can be injection molded and extruded for use in a unique range of applications. "These new aromatic grades were primarily designed with ski boots and sports and leisure footwear in mind," said Bayer Polymers' Gerry DiBattista, market channel manager - TPU injection molding. "Along with good transparency, the new grades provide good abrasion resistance and high tear propagation strength."

Besides typical injection molded applications where clarity and toughness are needed, the new aromatic Desmopan TPU grades can be used for extruded parts such as tubing or belts. The TPU grades can also be enhanced with Bayer Polymers' Fantasia® colors and special effects technologies. "Fantasia provides even more design options for this new TPU material," said DiBattista. "For example, you can produce clear parts and custom color them quickly to meet specific customer demands."

Application Snapshot

Inflatable Wheel Design

Bayer Polymers' Texin TPU is ideal for use in inflatable wheel applications. Also known as balloon wheels, fat wheels, sand wheels, mud wheels and beach wheels, inflatable wheels can be blow molded from Texin TPU, a flexible material that provides the wheels with increased abrasion resistance, impact strength, superior puncture resistance, and increased toughness. The Texin TPU wheels can be used on everything from wheelbarrows to beach carts.

The wheels' special pliability permits them to roll over soft sand, muddy turf, sensitive terrain and uneven ground. Because they are manufactured from Texin TPU, the inflatable wheels are stabilized against degradation due to heat and UV exposure – making them ideal for use in extreme climates that range from -22 to 212 degrees Fahrenheit.

Designer's Corner

Here's an idea for a future design using TPU

Bayer Polymers, a leader in plastic/metal hybrid technology, has developed new kind of hybrid design based on extrusion blow molding using TPU. The patent-pending process combines rigid and flexible materials inside the mold, creating components such as seat frames with integrated air-bladder cushions. Though it could work with a variety of elastomers, TPU grades will likely be the material of choice. TPU's combination of tear, puncture, chemical, thermal, and UV resistance make it well suited for various rugged seating applications. Examples include seats on lawn-and-garden equipment, recreational vehicles, and personal watercraft.

This seating concept above shows how the integration of a flexible TPU cushioning bladder (lighter color) would be integrated with a rigid thermoplastic substrate (black).
